Virginia Duval Mayfield is mother of John Mayfield, Professor at Iowa State University, and grandmother of Kate Mayfield and Margie Mayfield who grew up in Ames.
Virginia Gova Duval was born on July 23, 1911 in Aurora, Ill., the fourth of five children. Her childhood was spent on a farm in southeastern Missouri and in East Alton, Ill. She attended Shurtleff College, and in 1936, married Harold Ford Mayfield. Wife and mother of four children (Sigrid, John, Melinda, and Charles) Virginia devoted her life to her family. Family life was not always without problems, but she always did what was necessary for the good of the family. After her children left home, she became an accomplished artist. John, Kate and Margie are forever indebted to Virginia for the stable and loving environment she provided for John, and for being a supportive and caring grandmother.
