Virginia Valdez, a mother of three and a grandmother of 4, is a women full of determination, grit, and empowerment. Immigrating to the United States at the age of 20, she began working as a housekeeper in California; where she was determined to teach herself how to read, write, and speak English. Moving to Iowa in 1997, Virginia starting working for the State of Iowa and was strong-willed to provide the absolute best life for her kids. Although Virginia had many accomplishments under her belt, she was constantly faced with racism and bigotry at work and abuse from her husband at home. Although these challenges were constantly placed in front of her, Virginia only kept a positive attitude and overcame the hardships thrown at her. Virginia serves as a light to many people around her and continues to be the biggest and best support system for her children. I am so thankful to be able to call Virginia my mother.
